'Scottie Scheffler is the best-backed player': 2024 Open Championship oddsmaker insights and best bets
Input from oddsmakers and 30 bets for The Open from respected handicappers
The 2024 Open Championship begins on Thursday from Royal Troon in Scotland, and it should come as no surprise that World No. 1 and Masters champion Scottie Scheffler is the favorite. What may be a little surprising is just how big a favorite Scheffler enters the tournament as: At +450 odds at sportsbooks, Scheffler is the biggest favorite at The Open since Tiger Woods was +250 back in 2009 (Woods did not win).
Much like it was at the PGA Championship, the sportsbooks I checked in with this week all had Scheffler as the golfer with the most bets and most total dollars wagered to win outright.
“Scottie is the best-backed player, he has just under 25% of the handle,” Tristan Davis, senior trader at BetMGM, told me. “But further down the page, Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau have been the best-bet players with longer odds. I expect the money to keep flowing through, especially on Koepka. He is a crowd favorite in majors.”
Scheffler had the most wagers (16%) and handle (14%) at DraftKings Sportsbook to win The Open, as of Wednesday morning.
“Xander Schauffele has been our best bet matchup,” Davis added. “He has [gone from] -110 to -135 to beat Ludvig Aberg. The -110 to -125 was the sharp stuff. It’s not a sharp play anymore. Same deal with Morikawa to beat Bryson [going] -105 to -135.”
Here are 30+ bets for The Open from some great golf bettors, including outrights, finishing position and matchup wagers. I’ve also included public betting info from DraftKings, Fanatics and BetMGM sportsbooks to help with your bets.
