PGA Championship best bets and oddsmaker insights
Input from several oddsmakers and 25 best bets from respected handicappers
It’s a busy week in sports betting with the NBA Playoffs, Stanley Cup Playoffs, NFL schedule release, WNBA season starting, The Preakness and more, but the 2024 PGA Championship from Valhalla Golf Course in Louisville, Kentucky also gets underway today. Scottie Scheffler (+450) is the deserving favorite after winning the 2024 Masters — and four of his last five starts this season. Scheffler hasn’t finished outside of the top 10 in a tournament since mid-January.
I spoke with a couple of oddsmakers about the action for the PGA’s second major , and aggregated a few best bets from some respected handicappers.
Outright market
“Scheffler we have at +450 right now,” Thomas Gable, sportsbook director at the Borgata in Atlantic City, told me on a call on Wednesday. “Rory McIlroy, prior to the Wells Fargo was 12-1. We dropped him to 8-1 after the win there. He’s currently at +750. Rory has the second-most tickets written on him. Guy who has the most tickets and money on him is Brooks Koepka (14-1). He’s our biggest liability. Two weeks ago, he won the LIV Singapore event. If people are hesitant to invest in Scheffler or Rory at the prices they’re at, he’s another good option.”
Scheffler has the most tickets (23.4%) and handle (25.7%) at Fanatics Sportsbook to win the PGA Championship and has garnered more outright tickets than the golfers who rank second through fourth in that category combined (McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, Ludvig Aberg).
Scheffler also has the most bets (18.2%) and total dollars wagered (29.4%) at BetMGM sportsbooks, and represents their biggest liability.
“The outright market looks the same as the Masters,” Tristan Davis, BetMGM senior manager in Nevada told me over the phone on Wednesday afternoon. “It’s really the three players – Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau and Koepka. Very much the same for top 5 markets and top 10 markets. Brooks is who we’d be cheering most against for.”
The biggest liability for Fanatics Sportsbook is Tiger Woods, but the betting has tailed off from the frenzy of outright action we saw supporting him at The Masters.
